Wax seal stamp DIY
Don’t you just love receiving letters in the mail? Unfortunately most correspondence is done over email so letter on your doormat are becoming a rarity . Let’s send out some more thank you notes and birthday messages instead of sending a WhatsApp shall we?
Why not decorate your letter with a wax seal? A stamp pressed in warm wax to close your letter will make it just that little bit more special. Did you know these stamps are super easy to make yourself with a pice of dowel and a button? I know! SO simple!
To make the stamps you will need:
Buttons, my local haberdashery has the best button wall ever!
Dowel pieces, toughly 2 cm wide and 6 cm long
Super glue
Lighter
How amazing is this wall of button in my local haberdashery!! There is just so much choice! For the stamps you want to use a button that has a clear figure, something that will leave an imprint easily. Stay away form any letters and numbers as they will come out mirrored in the wax making them unreadable.
Cut the dowel to size, you want pieces of roughly 6 cm long. If you don’t have any dowel you can use a cork as well or anything that has a similar shape.
Sand the pieces of dowel nice and smooth
Use super glue to glue your button to the top of the dowel piece, be careful not the glue your fingers too. If you want you could drill a hole in the top of your dowel so the button fixing falls inside it, making for an even more stable bond.
Once the glue has dried, this might take an hour or so, you can start heating your wax. I’m using the Manuscript sealing wax from Creative Rox, you just need to light the wick and drip the molten wax on your envelop.
Once the puddle of wax is big enough, around the size of a pound coin and twice as thick, you blow out your sealing wax stick and press your stamp into the wax. Don’t leave the stamp in the wax for longer then a second otherwise it might get stuck.
Isn’t this fun! And so simple to make, I got lots of different buttons to try but think I like this anchor shape best. What kind of stamp would you make?
