DIY shelf with pallet houses
You might have spotted this shelf I build for Kiki’s room in some previous post as it kept popping up in the background. I finally got round editing the tutorial video so have a look at my shelf with pallet wood houses.
Kiki’s new bedroom had very boring walls and although I like the calmness the white gives I thought it was time to add a bit of fun. It started with the painted radiator, if you missed that tutorial have a look here. This gave a lot of colour the room but the wall was still a bit boring, time to build something!
I had a look at my timber stash and found a pine plank that would make a great shelf. I also had a few pallet wood planks leftover so I came up with this fun design of little storage houses.
I love the texture the pallet wood has, especially against the shiny white plank so I decided to only give the inside of the houses a lick of paint. this gives a little pop of colour to the room and also an injection of texture. I love how the storage houses act as little showcases for Kiki’s toys. The bear card I stuck on the wall with some masking tape is her birth announcement :)
The pine plank I used is 64 cm by 14 cm (completely said something different in the video!!), I used 7 cm wide pallet wood and for the houses you need to cut:
pink house, sides 22 cm and roof planks 12 cm
blue house, sides 17 cm and roof 8.5 cm
black house, sides 21 cm and roof 7 cm
I used a mitre saw to make the 30 degree angle cuts, I also used a palm sander, wood glue, hammer and nails, masking tape, drill with a wood bit and wood screws.
The paint I used is Rust-Oleum’s all surface paint in Matt white, rose, Lagoon and Satin black. This is the same paint I used on the radiator.
You can use ready made bracket to hang the shelf but I made my own out of scrap pieces of timber. You need to cut one plank to the size of the dept of your plank (this will be the top) one plank the dept-the thickness of your wood (the back) and then measure how long the diagonal piece need to be, cut this with two 45 degree angles. Glue and nail it all together and your bracket is done, easy!
I love how I can use the houses to store a few of Kiki’s toys, ready for when she wakes up as the little lady likes to have a little play before she is ready to face the world :)
