Hi.

Welcome to my blog. I document my adventures in DIY, interior and lifestyle. Hope you have a nice stay!

I repainted my kitchen counters

I repainted my kitchen counters

Five years ago I gave my kitchen a much needed makeover, when we moved in the kitchen was very bland beige with a blue countertop. You might remember me changing the cupboard doors with plywood ones, wallpaper over the ugly tiles and painting the walls blue and, and few months later white. I also painted the kitchen counters with a kit from Giani Granite, gone was the blue counter top and in it’s lace a lovely stone lookalike. Have a look at the original blog post here (https://www.hestershandmadehome.com/hestershandmadehome//painted-kitchen-counters-with-giani-granite)

Painting the counters was such a good low budget makeover. The whole process takes a few days but for a fraction of the price of new countertops you have great looking faux stone ones. After five years of wear and tear some bits of the paint had lifted, especially where Kiki’s bottle machine was. Formula is real sticky so the bit of counter in front of the machine got scrubbed clean a lot, the paint gave up after a while and the original blue countertop shone through. Time for a repaint!

In some spots it came off though

When Giani Granite send over the kit for the original tutorial (the paint was gifted) the send me two kits, I only used one so the other has been in my shed gathering dust for years. Not sure if the paint was still good I thought I better try this kit first before buying something new, you know I love to shop in my shed :D

I only used the base coat though, Ian really liked the counters before I sponged the stone effect paint on so this time round I thought lets do a look he likes. I would normally always go for the lightest colour or even natural wood so to go this dark in my super light kitchen was pretty bold for me!

Have a look at the video to see how I got on.

What do you think? Liking the black counter? I am surprised I rather like it! The pastel back splash really pops against the counter as do my colourful appliances. I haven’t got a clue how the paint will hold as it is paint on top of paint I have a feeling it might scratch easily but it has been 3 weeks since I painted it and so far so good! The black does really show up water marks though, I sort of forgot that as our flat 8 years ago had black countertops. I will keep you posted on how it keeps up!
