Painted kitchen counters with Giani Granite

Painted kitchen counters with Giani Granite

kitchen makeover

It's time for an other episode in my kitchen makeover series for Hester's House updates and as you can see in the picture above the kitchen facelift is coming along nicely. Before my kitchen looked bland and boring but with the new floor and painted walls a bit of colour and style got injected (if you missed that tutorial have a look here) and this week I tackle the dated kitchen counters.

Replacing your kitchen counter can be a costly affair, especially if you want to go for a marble or granite and as my house makeover is being done on a budget I thought there must be an other option. I was always wondering if you could paint a counter but never found the right product as the paint needs to be though but also safe. Luckily I stumbled across the perfect paint on Pinterest: the Giani Granite paint kit.

Giani Granite has developed five different coloured kits to transform your formica, laminate, tiled or stone counters into a great looking granite workspace. It's a quick and easy kitchen upgrade that even the most novice painters can manage as al the steps are clearly explained to you by the kits dvd or by the Giani Granite tutorials on their website. The paints are water based and low in odour and they hide existing stains, burns and scratches so perfect if your kitchen needs an upgrade. I went for the White Diamond kit which is great for a white or light grey granite look or you could even paint your counter into marble stone with this kit. Have a look on their website for the other colours.

The kitchen counters are done, now for the rest of the update: new look for the tiles and new cabinets! Cant wait to show you the overall look.

One paint kit is enough for 35 square feet and I had plenty left over after I finished painting. The kit includes a black base coat, 3 coloured minerals that create the granite effect, a clear polyurethane topcoat, 2 roll applicators, a foam applicator, a sponge, a piece of black paper to practise your painting on, an instruction dvd and a instruction brochure. The Giani instruction video's are brilliant and full of tips so I will not go into to much specific detail on how to apply but show you the general application techniques. As you can see in the video below it's pretty easy as the people from Giani Granite label all the products for the required steps.

So sit back, relax and make your self a cup of tea as this is my longest video to date,  whopping 11 minutes!

Doesn't the paint make a massive difference? And as you layer the colours you can make it as light or as dark as you want. As I said in the video my boyfriend walked in mid painting and really liked the look when the black was still showing through so I didn't make my counters to light. Also I wasn't so keen on the gold paint from step 2 so I only used a little bit of that, you can really adjust this kit to create the look you want and looks best in your kitchen.

Now the floor, walls and counter look so great I can't wait to finish the kitchen by changing the tiles and cupboards. Tune in the next couple of weeks to see those tutorials and for the complete look once I finished my kitchen makeover.

Do you have a kitchen stuck in the 70's? Awful formica counter tops? Or did you burn your counters with a hot pan?
