DIY domed cake stand, great upcycled Mothers day gift

With Mother’s day around the corner it will be a weird one this year as we won’t be able to go and visit. Mother’s day is on different days around the world, here in the UK we had it several weeks ago but most countries in Europe and the USA have theirs on the 10th of May. Now we are all in social isolation wouldn’t it be fun if you can still make a present fo your mum, with materials you already have so you don’t need to go shopping. Something pretty to leave on her doorstep, so you can celebrate at a distance. Home baked goods are always a good idea especially when they come wrapped in a gorgeous domed cake stand!

This cake stand is not only great for Mother’s day, how about bringing some cake to your friend? Maybe an elderly neighbour or a family member that works in health care? Or just make one for yourself to cheer up your day, we all need some sparks of joy at the moment and home made cookies sure light a spark :D

The glass dome will keep your bakes clean and fresh and makes your cake stand look extra special. Especially when you drop a bake of at your mums the dome will keep your cake safe in transport and on the doorstep. Unfortunately my mum lives in a different country so the cake and cake stand has to be a virtual present for my mum, here you go mam!

I used a Falcon enamel plate and sauce dish to make the small stand and a Falcon enamel deep plate and cup to make the larger one. The domes are vases from Ikea, they are in the Cylinder range and you get 3 vases/bowls for £13, bargain! I used the 18 cm wide vase and the 22 cm wide one.

The glue I used is Gorilla Contact Adhesive Clear a waterproof glue that works fast, perfect for making the cake stands. You also need two wooden balls, they once I used are 4 cm in diameter.

When looking in your home for items you can use to make the cake stands just make sure your vase is deep and wide enough to hold a cake and the plates are big enough for the vases. More narrow vases are great for gifting cookies as you can just stack them in the vase.

I love making things from items I already own! By using the enamel plates and cups you get a very clean looking cake stand. You can of course use patterned plates too or whatever plates you have in your cupboard.
