Hi.

Welcome to my blog. I document my adventures in DIY, interior and lifestyle. Hope you have a nice stay!

Build and style a picture ledge

Build and style a picture ledge

Every house needs art. Prints, paintings and photo's really add to the mood in your room. I love a gallery wall but the downside is that every time you want to change a picture you have to drill a new hole in the wall to hang it. That is a lot of holes you have to patch up in your walls! A picture ledge (or shelf) is the perfect answer, attached to the wall with just 5 screws (less or more depending on its size) you can display all your art pieces, books, trinkets and flowers on the shelf in an every changing way. Have a look at the video how easy it is to build and I will also give you some tips on how to style your art display.

How versatile is that shelf! The art pieces give a great colour pop to the room, it's a prefect spot to pop the book or magazine that you are reading and to showcase some of the plants and trinkets you love. I initially wanted to put the shelf higher up on the wall but was afraid it might have looked a bit to heavy and it might have been a head banging risk too. I instead drilled it into the wall on the same height of the sofa. Before you attach the shelf to the wall make sure you use the right wall plugs and check for pipes and wire before you drill your holes. If you have a stud wall attach the ledge straight to the timbers.

It is so easy to change the styling of your art on the shelf just look at the image above, I kind of like it when there is not to much going on like on the middle picture but a full shelf can be great too! The portrait is a called Kiss baby and is an artwork the boyfriend picked out for the new house, it is from Shed Boutique. It's a real marmite piece people love it or hate it! The portrait of Kermit was a gift after a shoot he did for Tatler magazine, love that shot and couldn't not use it in the living room, could I?  All the other pieces are prints from King&McGaw a great company that will help you fill your home with affordable art. Photo's, contemporary art, botanical prints, museum masters and modern art there is enough for you to choose from and you can adapt the size, frame and mount to fit your interior.

The prints I used:

  • The big succulent is Saturn by Deborah Schenk
  • Jardin D'Automne from Inaluxe is the yellow and black piece
  • The house print is Ventura by Marcus Walters
  • The canvas is Vases by Clare Owen
  • The paper print is Leafy Goodness by Hello Marine

Feel inspired by all these prints? The lovely people of King and McGaw are giving you a chance to start your own art collection by giving away a £100 to spend in their shop! How do you display art in your living room? Do you like to change things up or do you have the same piece on the wall for the last 5 years? I love the look of this shelf behind the sofa and how I can keep changing its styling to go with the seasons. How great is the sofa by the way? If you missed last weeks post all about this Peggy sofa go have a look here. My living room finally finished its complete makeover and I love how airy but cozy it looks.
